The work of the Croatian painter Vlaho Bukovac is closely tied to Prague. From 1903 until his death in 1922, he worked as an associate professor at the Prague Academy of Fine Arts, where he gained a reputation as one of the best professors. Prominent Czech avant-garde painters, such as Bohumil Kubišta and Emil Filla, worked in his atelier. The presented nude probably comes from artist's early Prague period. It depicts reclining young women in a characteristic pose with hand curled behind her head, which recurs in numerous variations in Vlaho Bukovac's nude portraits. The frame bears a label "Prof. Vlaho Bukovac".
