Late 17th/early 18th century
walnut wood, bone, brass
98 x 148 x 66 cm (h x w x d)
Starting price
This impressive late Mannerist writing chest, known as a cassettone, likely originates from the Lombardy or Veneto region. It is characterized by a stepped front and rich inlay work of carved bone featuring a floral motif, with a dove on each of the four drawers. The top drawer slides out to reveal a folding writing surface inlaid with maple, featuring a set of nine smaller drawers. The chest’s front has a concave break, the sides are adorned with geometric ornamentation, and the richly decorated hardware comes in three different designs—lions, marine figures, and mascarons. Excellent condition.
