Jiří Martin drew inspiration from French art as well as from Republican Spanish painters who exhibited in Prague in 1946. The couple is depicted with an intimate, poetic delicacy in soft, flowing lines that harmonize with the pastel-toned color scheme. Jiří Martin not only employs the language of color but also uses scraping to create tactile textures. In 1948, Jiří Martin held his first solo exhibition; his work was at odds with the regime, and he was expelled from the Union of Czechoslovak Visual Artists and later joined the Máj 57 group.
