The work is the artist’s unique interpretation of the work of Edward Hicks, an American painter and Quaker who created over 60 works on the theme of the “Kingdom of Peace.” In the spirit of Quaker principles—silence, equality, nonviolence, simplicity, and community—he created paintings of animals and people living harmoniously side by side and resting in nature, as described in Isaiah 11:6–8: “The wolf will dwell with the lamb, and the leopard will lie down with the kid. The calf and the lion cub and the fattened calf together; and a little child will lead them..."
