A hand-knotted wool rug on a wool warp from northern Iran—the Guchan region of Khorasan Province. The eye-catching design is dominated by large stylized peacocks, familiar from ancient Caucasian rugs. A popular variety of Persian carpets, once woven by a Kurdish community that settled long ago at the very northeastern tip of Iran, near the border with Turkmenistan. Characteristic of the so-called Guchan carpets is their geometric design, unlike that of other Iranian regions, remarkably blending Kurdish, Caucasian, and Turkmen influences. The wool is typically very fine, velvety to the touch, hand-spun, and of exceptional quality even to the untrained eye and touch. A nearly new and professionally cleaned carpet.
