BIRDS OF PARADISE
1909
tempera, cardboard
63 x 42,5 cm (h x w)
signed and dated lower right: Ad. A. Zahel 1909
Starting price
Adolf Alois Zahel was born in the late 1880s in Prague, where he studied in Karel Vítězslav Mašek’s studio of decorative painting from 1907 to 1910. This 1909 work is among Zahel’s early pieces, created during his studies at the School of Applied Arts in Prague. Although this artist’s name is often associated primarily with landscape painting, this 1909 painting of birds set against an organic tangle of decorative motifs is a valuable example of his early works, which were still strongly influenced by the Art Nouveau style.
