The author of the three stable mobiles, or “silent servants” is architect Daniel Špička. He began working on stable mobiles in the early 1970s, inspired by Alexander Calder’s “airy” objects. In the artist’s own words: “I designed the mobiles to create ever-changing shapes, both as a group and individually.” I called them “silent companions” or “servants.” My stable mobiles can also serve as “servants” because you can hang items of clothing on them or set down various small items such as watches, cufflinks, and the like. Stable mobiles are made from laminated blocks of elm wood, but often also from oak or cherry wood. Their surfaces are stained and finished with classic shellac polish. They work best in a group, but can also stand alone. I signed them with my small monogram carved with a chisel.
