A hand-knotted wool carpet on a wool warp from northern Afghanistan—Balch Province, Daulatabad region. An appealing all-over design consisting of wide, diagonally arranged bands in which rosette and angular ram’s horn motifs are repeated very effectively. This rectangular field is complemented in a very interesting way by a multiple border adorned with, among other things, distinctive flowers, stylized trees, hook-shaped ornaments, five-colored polygons, and a charming botanical meander—composed of flowers and scrolls (or flowing water as a symbol of life)—which surrounds the main border with a crimson background on both the right and left sides. An unusual carpet, likely made by the Turkmen minority.
