The Lady in a Hat is a high-quality work by an unknown artist from the German or Austrian art scene. The painterly style is distinctly Expressionist; thick layers of paint applied with a brush, and perhaps a palette knife, swirl impulsively in crisscross patterns, creating a dramatic effect. Unsigned, with only the manufacturer’s stamp on the stretcher; the back of the painting is thoroughly painted over with ivory-colored paint, beneath which lies another version of the portrait.
