Beneš Knüpfer began his artistic career at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, continuing in 1870 at the Academy in Munich under Karl von Piloty, with whom he studied historical painting. Nine years later, he left on a study trip to Rome, from where he never returned to his homeland. It is interesting that what most visibly influenced Knüpfer's work in Italy was not classical ancient or Renaissance art, which crowds of young foreign artists came to study here. What is most reflected in Knüpfer's work is the element of the sea.
