Panuška had a lifelong love of nature and began to paint simple motifs from the open landscape already at the Prague Academy around 1893. After two decades of leaning towards symbolism, from which well-known fairy-tale and ghostly scenes are based, after 1920 he again concentrated on motifs from the Czech countryside. Panuška is considered to be the most original pupil of the famous Mařák school, who in his work combines the older realistic tradition with more modern impressionistic painting techniques.
