This dark monochromatic work is atypical for painter, printmaker and conservator Václav Kiml, an otherwise unique exponent of Poetism and soft color tones. Abstract structural painting combined with the artist's encaustic technique depicts one of the most tragic moments in Czech history – the loss of hope for freedom following the Warsaw Pact invasion of Czechoslovakia. As a result, it is both an artistically and historically valuable work. Václav Kiml's inimitable work, represented in important collections including the National Gallery, is close to another member of the Etapa art group, Prague-based painter František Ronovský.
