This visually powerful image is an important work by Josef Šíma from the first half of the 1960s. His contemplations on light marked his entrance into a new period that stemmed from his earlier Orpheus paintings, which in the late 1950s brought him to the forefront of postwar art as one of the main exponents of modern European painting. Here the artist dealt with ideas about portraying inner light and finding just how far the line of legibility can be pushed. Inner movement is another clear feature that attracts admirers of his paintings. Šíma's meditative position may be compared with a similar meditative position in American abstract art; however, Šíma does not leave his European roots holding our world together, which he found in ancient Greece. From a major Prague collection.
