This still life by Alois Wachsman, an important painter, architect and Czech avant-garde artist who co-founded the Devětsil art group, is a beautiful example of poetic naïve art – an artistic style launched at the First Spring Exhibition in 1922 (along with with the careers of Josef Čapek, František Muzika and Karel Teige). Wachsman amplifies his effort to reach out to common people not only through his choice of a primitivist style, but also through the sloppy composition featuring utensils found in any country kitchen. With his confident draftsmanship he achieves strong contrasts, using light to give volume to individual objects.
