In his works, Petrarch often complained about the fickle Fortune, the ancient goddess Fortuna, who was capable of granting prosperity one day and inflicting adversity the next. The monumental record is a summation of Petrarch's philosophy, comprising 254 dialogues between Reason and the four Passions (Joy and Hope, Sorrow and Fear). In the 15th through 17th centuries the book was highly popular throughout Europe, serving as a source of quotations and examples.
