This rare relief, created using the so-called Cheb intarsia technique, is based on a composition by Christoph Schwartz, who worked at the German court of Maximilian I in the second half of the 16th century. The work entered circulation when Jan I. Sadeler the Elder adapted the painting into an engraving. Cheb relief intarsia, representing the pinnacle of craftsmanship, is a unique 17th-century Baroque artistic technique found exclusively in Cheb, combining woodcarving and veneering. Unlike flat marquetry, it is characterized by a three-dimensional relief, most often depicting figural scenes, landscapes, or still lifes on furniture, such as cabinets.
