Aleksey Danilovich Kivshenko was a Russian painter who focused primarily on historical scenes. Among his best-known works are paintings depicting the Russo-Turkish Wars. He also created hunting and genre scenes and was a member of the Peredvizhniki movement, which reacted against the "dead art" at the Academy of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg. The study presented here displays a remarkable photorealistic style; the man is dressed in a traditional long black "chokha" costume, typical of the Caucasus region, particularly in Georgia. Verso written testimonial of author's widow.
