Arthur Volkmann was born in Leipzig and was drawn to an artistic career from an early age. He later enrolled at the Academy in Dresden. His paintings represent a minor part of his body of work; Volkmann was primarily a sculptor, which is one reason why this painting is shaped by a sculptural sensibility.
