This watercolor landscape study by painter Josef Tulka is exceptional for a number of reasons. Tulka was first and foremost a figure artist who focused on Nazarene art and on a painting style that was close to Josef Mánes and Mikoláš Aleš. His most important works include the Human Life series at Prague's Thun Palace and five lunettes for the enclosed balcony in Prague's National Theater. The landscape study could have been for a memorial; only a small number of Tulka's works have been preserved and they do not appear on the art market, as he destroyed them before he mysteriously disappeared. The figure of the pilgrim could be a depiction of himself departing for an Italian monastery in 1882. He never wrote again from his trip, and information about his life ends in Italy Expert assessment: PhDr. Naděžda Blažíčková-Horová.
