Antonín Chittussi's impressive painting of a birch grove points to his sensitive approach to the landscape and to the roots of the pleinism of the classics of the Barbizon school. The painter was the grandson of a businessman from Ferrara, Italy, and studied at academies in Prague, Munich, Vienna and Paris. From 1879 he worked in Paris. He focused mainly on open-air landscaping and also successfully participated in the Salon. Already during his life he gained the position of the first Czech modern landscape painter with an international perspective. His first group exhibition took place in Prague in 1885. On the back of the estate stamp with the inventory number of Chittussi's estate.
