A bust of Roman Emperor Hadrian as a hero and courageous warrior. Like Hercules, the emperor is wearing over his shoulder the skin of the Nemean Lion, who was slain by the Greek hero. The sculpture was made using the old Italian technique of scagliola. In this example, the technique faithfully imitates Belgian black marble. Fine marble dust and metal pigment were used, and the surface is sealed with wax. Wooden base with imitation stone.
