Kamil Lhoták (1912 - 1990) HIGH MOUNTAINS IN THE SUBURBS

Kamil Lhoták is one of the key figures in Czech painting of the second half of the 20th century. His landscapes are poetic representations of both a technologically advanced world and landscapes with fewer visible traces of human activity—landscapes that are new and full of contrasts. Lhoták strongly felt that the landscape painting of the old era needed to be transformed and that new approaches had to be sought—his own ways of rendering and his own vision. With their delicacy and brushwork, the “High Mountains in the Suburbs” evoke the impression of a previous century-styled landscape, yet thematically they shift into the realm of the real present.
