The silvery, foaming stream meandering among rocky formations covered in forest vegetation is from Mánes’s early work. The artist masterfully combines a romantic treatment of an idealized landscape with realistic details. In his works, Antonín Mánes routinely oscillates between classical principles and the Romantic movement; he was strongly influenced by the exhibited works of the German Romantics Caspar David Friedrich and Johann Christian Dahl, whom he met in Prague in 1824. Dahl’s dramatic compositional structure of mountain landscapes with deep valleys, trees, and meandering river courses was particularly close to his heart. This Romantic landscape with a mountain stream is exceptional on the market both in terms of its format and the quality of its execution. Verso label: Haus Julius Braner, Gegründet, Kunsthandlung (13b) Altenburg Thur. The work is accompanied by an expert opinion by PhDr. Naděžda Blažíčková-Horová.
