Jan Zrzavý (1890 - 1977) CHAPEL OF SAINT MARY MAGDALENE NEAR CHELČICE

The chapel in Chelčice inspired Jan Zrzavý to create several works. He painted and sketched it from various angles; the sketch shown here belonged to František Srubek, the parish priest of Chelčice, at whose home Jan Zrzavý often stayed and with whom he got along very well despite their age difference. The Vodňany countryside held a special place in Zrzavý’s heart, and the long-time residents fondly recalled their encounters with the painter in his beret.
