Alois Kalvoda (1875 - 1934) TREES BY THE RIVER

Alois Kalvoda studied at the Academy under Professor Julius Mařák. His teacher’s romantic conception of landscape influenced Kalvoda only briefly, but he applied his teacher’s approach to students throughout his entire teaching career. In 1900, thanks to a Hlávka scholarship, he had the opportunity to undertake a study trip to Paris and, a year later, to Munich. Modern Western painting found its way into his landscapes through a looser style and a departure from strict academicism. The drawing presented here is an example of his fondness for playing with light on the water’s surface.
