Viktor Barvitius received an exemplary education in painting under Christian Ruben and Eduard von Engerth; his classmates included Julius Mařák and Hugo Ullik, among others. Viktor Barvitius was by nature patient and even meticulous. He followed the academic rules and later achieved a new style with greater artistic confidence. The Intimate Portrait of a Horse was created during a period when Barvitius was working as an inspector of art collections in the field of museology and gallery operations, and in his spare time he painted copies of works from art collections for himself. The work’s historicist conception attests to his great love for Old Master art.
