Josef Král was a sensitive landscape painter who masterfully captured the play of light in nature. He was able to realistically depict a misty morning by a pond as well as a forest interior with a game preserve, where sunlight streams in in thin rays. He studied at the Academy under Julius Mařák and later under Rudolf von Ottenfeld. He received a travel grant and painted in Germany and France. While traveling, he mostly painted what he rarely saw at home—ships and maritime transport. In his home environment, he devoted himself to the Czech landscape with great precision.
