Španělská škola INFANT JESUS WITH A DOVE

17th-century Baroque painting is considered the golden age of Spanish painting. The figures emerge from the chiaroscuro compositions, glowing as distinct sources of light; in addition to bright color tones, attributes, props, and animals also feature prominently in the iconography. The painting on offer exhibits characteristics of the Seville school and finds parallels, for example, in a work from the circle of Juan Simón Gutiérrez—The Little Virgin Mary Spinning at the spindle—with which it shares the theme of childhood, delicate facial features, accessories, perfectly rendered drapery, and the presence of flowers in the composition. The artist of this work depicting the infant Jesus undoubtedly received high-quality training in painting.
