"The Knight, Death, and the Devil" is an iconic work by Dürer that explores the struggle against three unequal adversaries—the body, the devil, and the world. In the work of Jiří Anderle, too, we find thematic strands focused on struggle, existentialism, and the journey into the inner world that lies beneath the surface. Perhaps it is precisely the human imagination that can create the most terrifying enemy we must face. Erasmus of Rotterdam advises in his Manual of the Christian Soldier (1504): “All those spectres and spirits that rush at you as if you were in the very bowels of the underworld, you must regard as nothing, just as Virgil’s Aeneas… Do not look back.” The artwork has been framed behind museum-grade anti-reflective glass with a UV filter.
