The popular theme of the Temptation of St. Anthony has been a staple of painting since the late Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Karel Stroff was a master of symbolist scenes; he chose both mythological and religious themes, and his paintings frequently feature gnomes, naiads, water sprites, and dancers. It is precisely a charming naiad who serves as Anthony’s temptress in Stroff’s work. He also created caricatures. Karel Stroff studied under Emanuel Krescence Liška and later transferred to Professor Ženíšek.
