Rudolf Svoboda is known mainly as a creator of monumental sculptures in public spaces. Well-known works such as Return from the Cosmos for the Central Telecommunications Building in Prague, or the sculpture group Work in front of the University of Mining in Ostrava-Poruba are still highly valued today. Svoboda is not a mere phenomenon of Czechoslovak sculpture, for many of his works are kept in official and private collections abroad.

His work was inspired by Hellenic bronzes, Mirin terracottas, the art of pre-Columbian America, and among more modern authors, Constantin Brâncuși and Hans Arp were his inspiration. His sculptures attract with their impressive smoothness, purity and precision of forms, which range from realism to abstraction. The presented "Torzo" is an exemplary specimen of his smaller format work.
