František Líbal studied at the Prague Academy with Vlaho Bukovac and Max Pirner. After graduating, he traveled a lot and created a set of depictions of cathedrals, which is highly valued for its integrity. František Líbal returned to Prague's views throughout his life and painted them in a brisk and brilliant way at various times of the day and season. The Prague Nocturne stands out especially for its atmosphere and stylization, which is reminiscent of the works of Jakub Schikaneder. František Líbal's use of human staff is rather unique, but here he very appropriately completes the charge of the whole composition.
