A portrait of an unknown man was attributed to Mach in Vienna in 1943. Stylistically, however, it is more consistent with the work of German or Austrian artists. The portrait depicts an elegant gentleman from the 1830s–1840s wearing a green jacket, a bow tie, and a gold chain; a slip of paper with an appraisal from 1943 is affixed to the back.
