Milada Marešová (1901 - 1987) NEAR AN OLD OAK

Milada Marešová was among the first women allowed to study at the Academy of Fine Arts, and the themes of her paintings were far ahead of their time. She was deeply attuned to the people around her and was a painter of the vibrant urban atmosphere as well as the lot of ordinary people, particularly that of women. She stripped the women she depicted of embellishments and gave them the role not merely of artistic objects, but of distinctive narrators of life stories—some whispering conspiratorially on benches, others bearing the weight of major decisions on their shoulders. Milada Marešová imbued her paintings with psychological depth and a strong social dimension.
