The Allegory of the Air follows thematically from the work of, for example, Jan Brueghel and Ambrosio Francken, allegories of the elements were very popular in the 16th and 17th centuries. Characteristic is the gradation of color from the painting surface, enhancing the depth of aerial distances, from the edge of the forest with a view into the distant landscape. A very high-quality example of a landscape painting by an artist who was certainly influenced by older Dutch work and painted with great care the species of birds that materialize the level of the air here.
