Deep interest in the feminine world was evident in Milada Marešová's work from the very beginning. These were non-idealized likenesses of real people and destinies, sketches of the human psyche. In her view, widows become silent, static and melancholic symbols, remnants of distress and an existence doomed to solitude. They form a complementary piece to her portraits of brides, which, with their non-participating and often introverted conception, foreshadow the first step into marriage - an inevitable fate and a life on the road to grief. Brides and widows are a reflection of the Marian cult, which depicts female love even in its position of total devotion and necessary sacrifice.
