Ivo Režek (1898 - 1979) LOVERS NEAR WATER

Ivo Režek was from Varaždin, Croatia, and was a student of Vlaho Bukovać. The way he sculpted his figures reflects his neoclassical sensibility. After graduating in 1924, he became interested in mural painting techniques, specifically fresco painting, and went to Paris to study fresco techniques. He exhibited his work in Parisian salons. He returned to Zagreb in 1931 and from 1934 to 1938 served as art editor of the magazine Kopriva, where he wrote scathing critiques of fascism (drawing caricatures of Hitler and Mussolini) and was politically persecuted.
