A painter, printmaker and illustrator with an inimitable style, Lhoták is in high demand on the auction market. A self-taught artist who created hundreds of works during the war, he says that during this time "the searching KL" became the painter Kamil Lhoták. This is how he presents himself by signing his full name on one of his works from 1942, the year in which Group 42 was established; Lhoták was also a member of the art group. This painting, obtained from an important German collection, was created based on the lithograph "Target" from 1965. The painting dates from a period when he first presented one of his symbols, The Desert Machine, an invented hourglass-shaped object. Both works are unique for their complexity and the simplicity of the all-telling subject. A target is set in the landscape, permitted to peer out from behind the central motif on just a small section of the canvas. Listed in the catalogue raisonné under no. 1293/3, Libor Šteffek: Kamil Lhoták – Obrazy, 2017.
