Diana's personality is complex and contains a number of archaic traits. Diana was originally considered the goddess of the wild and hunting, a central sport in both Roman and Greek culture. According to historian C.M. Green, she appears as a huntress, as the moon, as an image of the underworld. The painting shows a hunting party emerging from the forest and rushing across a stream. This is a dynamic composition in running and jumping, which was very popular with Flemish authors inspired by Rubens. The nymphs and Diana with their many dogs have caught up with a deer in a deep and ancient oak forest, with a hilly landscape looming on the horizon.
