According to the expert opinion prepared by PhDr. Rea Michalová, PhD.: “Seaside Bluff (Côte d’Azur) is an authentic, enchanting and for collectors an unusually interesting work by an artist whose dreamy lyrical landscape canvases are distinctive for their unique balance of values and means of artistic expression. It is depicted in the artist’s typical classic (revival) style, which brought him worldwide acclaim. Otakar Kubin-Coubine is one of few Czech artists who won recognition outside of his native country. His second home was France (from 1912), especially southern Provence, where he spent more than half his life and whose landscape was a lifelong source of inspiration ... In 1925 settled permanently in Simiane-la-Rotonde and received French citizenship. What makes this landscape is specific, however, is that it was not painted in Provence, but rather along the French Riviera. He created a similar coastal landscape with a view of the bluffs and seaside in two etchings in 1927, one of which offers a view of Port-Cros island near Toulon. In this painting, Coubine expresses himself as an exceptionally sensitive observer of Mediterranean nature. He selected his landscape scene right on site, as he supported the theory of one of the first landscape artist, plein air painter Eugène Boudin, that ‘everything that is painted directly and on the spot always has a strength, a power, a vivacity of touch which one cannot recover in the studio.’ He painted the Mediterranean landscape during one of the most beautiful times of year, in spring, when it is not scorched by the sun or blustery from the mistral, like a piece of heaven on earth.” Provenance: From the estate of Adolphe Basler.
