Oil on canvas. Signed lower right: “Jan Dědina”. The refined color and elegance of an Art Nouveau lady with an exposed shoulder holding a flower in her hand is an excellent example of the lessons in modern French art that Dědina learned during his residence in Paris. Dědina was a genre painter, illustrator and portraitist. He studied at Prague's School of Applied Arts under František Ženíšek and at the Academy of Fine Arts under Maximilián Pirner; he also studied sculpture under Josef Václav Myslbek. In 1895 he traveled to Paris, where he initially worked with the Hungarian painter Mihály Munkácsy. The majority of his work focused on magazine illustrations. He also designed posters. He exhibited at Salons in Paris, and in 1903 he was admitted as a member of the Salon. Housed in an original Jindřich Eck frame.
