Especially during their infancy in the modern era, entomological illustrations – and biological and scientific illustrations in general – were closely associated with art. Particularly the 16th and 17th centuries, i.e., the Late Renaissance and Early Baroque periods, were a crucial period. The results of artists' attempts to depict the minuscule, including insects, continue to be seen in entomological illustrations today.
