Zbyšek Sion is often referred to as a painter of heightened grotesque, illusory paintings and abstract imagination. The dark tone of his work probably stems from his direct experience of the horrors of war, when his father fell into the hands of the Gestapo and died in a German prison. According to Petr Nedoma, in his work, Zbyšek Sion permanently solves the ethical question of how a person should behave, against his will, placed in a world whose reality he was unwilling and perhaps not even able to identify with.
