Josef Král studied at the academy under Julius Mařák and later under Rudolf von Ottenfeld. He won a travel scholarship and painted in Germany and France. On his travels, he focused mainly on painting the environment with ships and railways, but in his home environment he painted lovely atmospheric landscapes with village houses, rivers and trees in the early evening light. The painting of the forest illuminated by the last rays of the setting sun and the stream that cuts into a nearby meadow is one of his very successful depictions of the shape of the Czech landscape.
