The painting was created based on an engraving by Aegidius Sadeler (see Hollstein/Sadeler 79, Hollstein/Aachen 37). Hans von Aachen's original is lost, but there are a number of engraved reproductions of Sadeler's original engraving (Crispijn de Passe, Cornelis Passe, Domenicus Custos, etc.) and a number of painted copies of various sizes. The original plate was in the inventory of Rudolf II's Kunstkammer. The typology of the faces, figures and carnation allow us to ascribe the work to the workshop of Hans von Aachen. Oil on copper.
