Chiparus is a major exponent of Art Deco. He left his native Romania for Italy, where he trained under Raffaello Romanelli. In 1912 he settled in Paris for good, studying at École des Beaux-Arts under Jean Boucher and others. A mere two years later he exhibited at the Paris Salon. The main body of Chiparus' work of the first two decades of the 20th century is characterized by slim, ethereal dancers inspired by Russian ballerinas and Oriental dancers. The acclaim Chiparus enjoyed led to his working with the famous Friedrich Goldscheider Manufactory and Majolica Factory. Ivory combined with gilded or polychrome bronze is also typical for the artist's work. Signed "DH Chiparus". Ivory, gilded bronze, marble base.
